About Todd

For much of his adult life, Congressman Todd Young has been serving his fellow Americans. After growing up in central Indiana, he enlisted in the Navy and was accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. After graduating with honors, he took a commission in the Marine Corps and became an intelligence officer working with unmanned aerial vehicles. His final stop in the Corps brought him back to the Midwest, where he was placed in charge of recruiting efforts for Chicago and Northwest Indiana. While stationed there, he took night classes at the University of Chicago and earned his MBA with a concentration in economics. A decade after he first enlisted, he was honorably discharged from the military as a Captain.

After leaving the military, Todd traveled overseas to study business and economics even further. After a year at the University of London, where wrote a thesis on American agricultural economics, he spent a few months in Eastern Europe and studied the emerging capitalist economies of former Soviet countries. Upon his return home he accepted a job with The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank in Washington, D.C., and later served as a legislative staffer in the United States Senate.

After a few years in Washington, Todd moved back to Indiana to help the policy team for Mitch Daniels, who was running for governor for the first time. In addition to advising the campaign, he also served on the transition team after Daniels won, and was hired as a management consultant at Crowe Chizek. In that capacity, he advised both private companies and public sector employees on ways to institute better business practices in order to become more efficient.

During this time, Todd once again put himself through night classes and ultimately earned his law degree from Indiana University. But he left law school with more than just a diploma: He met Jenny Tucker, a fellow law student who soon became his wife. After their wedding, the Youngs moved to Bloomington and commuted to Paoli to work in the family law firm founded by Jenny's great-grandfather during the Great Depression. In addition to working as an attorney and serving as a part-time deputy prosecutor for Orange County, Todd and Jenny also provided free legal services to couples trying to adopt.

In 2009, after watching President Obama and Washington Democrats force through the so-called "stimulus" package and prepare to do the same with health care reform, Todd decided he'd had enough and decided to run for Congress. A year later, thousands of Hoosiers joined him on the campaign trail and helped deliver a huge victory. He was appointed to the House Armed Services Committee, where he draws on his years of experience as a Marine, and to the House Budget Committee, where he last year worked with Congressman Paul Ryan to draft the House Republican Budget.

Todd and Jenny still live in Bloomington, where they stay busy raising their daughters, Abigal (5), Ava (3), and Annalise (1), and their son, Tucker (1).
